Chapter Six

Shawn stretched out and let out a sigh. After a quick shower, they’d gone shopping while Ben stayed behind to rest. When they’d returned, the pizzas had arrived and were served by Ben. After eating together, they went back to bed to get some sleep. A while later, he’d barely woken up when he’d seen Victor getting ready for work. With the demon having a random schedule, they couldn’t spend much time together.

That was starting to annoy him.

He got out of bed and glanced at the clock on the nightstand on his way to the bathroom. It was seven in the morning. They’d gone to sleep rather early. Since it was still winter and cold outside, the sunlight that came through the curtains that had been left slightly open was dim. He could hear the rain, but it didn’t sound heavy.

After getting ready for the day, Shawn went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. The apartment was quiet. His slippers slid on the floor while he got the bottle of orange juice from the fridge. He reached up to the top cabinet to get a glass and filled the cup.

Shawn looked down at his arms. Even though they had some muscle from having been constantly tense and pushed around by the demons, he still needed to gain some weight. Some sun would be nice as well, but the weather wasn’t favorable.

With a shrug, Shawn went to make some eggs and toast, and fried the bacon he’d begged Victor to buy. He glanced out the window and saw a few people and cars passing by. According to the higher-ranked demons, he could be in danger at any moment, but so far so good. It seemed that he could finally have a normal life. He had Victor now.

“Nah,” Shawn uttered. He desired more. He didn’t want to stand around while demons took over the world, especially the ones that bought and sold humans illegally. That was something that needed to be addressed as soon as possible. Who knew what had happened to the humans who he’d seen being taken by the demons in the red T-shirts just days ago?

The doorbell rang, making Shawn jump. He made his way to the front door hesitantly. If he remembered correctly, Miahu knew that he’d moved here, but he’d been caught. Maybe it was a demon. Shawn pressed on the intercom and looked at who it was through the small screen. He pressed on the speaker button. “Who is it?”

The man with dark hair and a vest over a blue shirt removed his earphones. He looked directly at the camera. “Oh, you answered. Hi, I’m a human. I would like to ask a few questions about the higher-ranked demons, if you don’t mind.”

This early in the morning? “What’s your name, stranger?” Shawn asked with a raised brow.

The man pulled out his wallet and showed his ID. “I’m detective Steven Morison. Humans with money have made me a free human to carry out investigations. Are you a human?” He didn’t have a black strap around his neck.
